Michael was a speaker at the 2023 PEER Annual Meeting held on August 24-25, 2023 at the Pauley Ballroom on the UC Berkeley campus. His presentation was entitled “Performance Based Economic Loss Assessment Due to a Hypothetical Large Southern California Earthquake Based on the Disruption and Recovery of Port of Los Angeles Freight Traffic”. Having presented this at the previous year’s PEER Researchers’ Workshop, Michael gave an update of this work to a larger audience.
In this work, Michael and Barbaros Cetiner, a collaborator formerly from UCLA, combined 3D bridge modeling, semi-dynamic traffic simulations, and financial cost/loss models into a framework to assess the impact of earthquakes to transportation networks and assessing their resilience, with a case study conducted on areas around the Port of Los Angeles. Presentation slides and recording will be available on the PEER website.
