The New Technology Project of the Year award was presented for the EBMUD Summit Pressure Zone South Pipeline Replacement, Phase 1 project (EBMUD – Claremont Ave Pipeline Monitoring – Oakland, California) by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), San Francisco section. This award recognizes projects which advance more efficient and sustainable civil infrastructure through innovation and advancement in technology such as implementation of new methods and improvements on existing methods and/or incorporating new emerging technology.
Distributed fiber optic sensors were installed in 2022 along an approximately 200m alignment of two critical water transmission pipelines (HDPE, 22” and 36” outer diameter) which cross the active Hayward fault along Claremont Avenue in Oakland, CA. This cutting-edge system for pipelines performance monitoring at active earthquake fault crossings will enable data-driven situational awareness for lifeline water infrastructure.
