Pajaro Hydro-Twin Project

    Creating a collaborative and evolving digital twin for diverse flood management applications in face of climate change

    The Pajaro Hydro-Twin Project is a collaboration between the UC Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure and the Vienna Research Center for Visual Computing (VRVis GmbH) in Austria. Through an interdisciplinary team of researchers and community partners, the main goal of the project is to develop a collaborative and evolving digital twin for climate adaptation, flood protection, and planning. With a pilot case study in Lower Pajaro River Valley, California, the project also seeks to explore the potential of this technology to better integrate environmental and equity considerations into flood risk management at a local scale.

    The project, led by Anna Serra-Llobet and Adda Athanasopoulus-Zekkos, involves a multidisciplinary group of researchers from Berkeley, including Kenichi Soga, Matt Kondolf, Chris Ansell, and PhD Candidate Gabriela Paredes, as well as researchers from VRVis GmbH, Jürgen Waser and Silvana Rauer-Zechmeister, and collaborators Mark Strudley (Pajaro Regional Management Agency) and Kofi Boone (North Carolina State University). The project is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and an Interdisciplinary Climate and Environmental Equity Seed Grant from the Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Research Office.
