Jaewon Saw presents at TRB Annual Meeting in Washington D.C.

Jaewon Saw presented at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting on January 6th, 2025 in Washington D.C., where she shared research on “Exploring distributed acoustic sensing for pedestrian monitoring: signal characteristics and identification using fiber optic cables embedded in roadways.”

This work (in collaboration with Dayu Apoji, Chien-Chih Wang, and Kenichi Soga) explored the application of DAS for pedestrian monitoring on the smart road at CSI – a roadway with fiber optic cable directly embedded into the surface. The study analyzed the energy content and signal characteristics of different movements (walking, jogging, running, and jumping) from individual pedestrians, observed the importance of DAS preprocessing steps on classification accuracy and feature interpretability, and discussed ongoing work in examining DAS performance in real-world road scenarios and validating DAS performance in the more typically found telecommunication cable setups.

This study has since been accepted by the Transportation Research Record for publication.
